Lori K. Gordon - Our Featured Artist

Ms. Gordon will attend the benefit as an honored guest of the New Learning Center. She has received extensive national recognition for her work in turning the tragedy of Katrina into a vibrant and meaningful new art form which she uses to promote the needs of others who have experienced loss. She was recently featured on National Public Radio.

About the piece "Flying Towards the Light"

Ms Gordon states that "It symbolizes the journey of women towards a better place in their lives." The central figure was cut from tin by an unknown artist. It is rusty and somewhat battered, but its "in flight" form and outreached hand indicates that there is a better life ahead. The flight takes determination but the reward, symbolized by the light, is well worth the effort. The figure of the woman is framed by a fragment of fine furniture which I salvaged from the debris of an antique store which had stood on the beach in Bay St. Louis.
